“Thanks For Being Here”

“Thanks for being here.” I hear this phrase quite often from responders on scene, especially in the midst of the more graphic, harsh situations. Last night, I heard this comment from several law enforcement officers as we stood in the middle of Highway 93, a few miles south of Whitefish. It was late at night, and again, I was reminded of the struggles that exist among people, some of which end in a grievous way.

I was privileged to talk through the entire scenario with the primary officer who initiated the traffic stop, pursued the vehicle as the occupants fled, and was a firsthand witness of the ultimate outcome. I have been given a unique place as I am allowed to come alongside of our faithful responders and assist in any way that helps them.

These men and women fulfill their roles in a professional manner, providing services 24 hours a day, without interruption. Their faithfulness to all duties includes getting called in when emergencies such as this one arise. This results in missed time with families, foregone sleep, extra reports to complete, and more trauma to process.

As an emergency responder chaplain, my calling is to be there, especially when the circumstances are very dark.
